Searches underway for new EEO and ADA positions


Two new staff positions to support MIT's equal opportunity and affirmative action programs--Assistant Equal Opportunity Officer and Coordinator of Disabilties Services--have been announced by Joan F. Rice, Vice President for Human Resources and Institute Equal Opportunity Officer.

The position of Assistant Equal Opportunity Officer became available when Dr. Clarence G. Williams took on full-time responsibilities as special assistant to the president, ombudsperson, and adjunct professor in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning earlier this year.

Responsibilities of the new Assistant Equal Opportunity Officer will include broad oversight of MIT's affirmative action programs for the employment of women, minorities, veterans and persons with disabilities, as well as activities related to compliance with government regulations regarding equal opportunity in employment and education. "We're also looking for a person who can be an effective resource in our efforts to recruit and advance women and minority group members in every job category at the Institute, including faculty and research positions, and who will provide leadership to help enhance diversity in all areas at MIT," Ms. Rice said.

A search committee has been appointed to assist in selecting a candidate for this position. Committee members include: Ramona Allen (Personnel Office); Cheryl Blankenship (Bursar's Office); Hsiao-Hua Burke (Lincoln Laboratory), Ruben Morfin-Ramirez (Office of Minority Education), Leo Osgood (Athletic Department), Evelyn Perez (School of Science), Myra Rodrigues (Medical Department) and Cynthia Valllino (Personnel Office).

The position of Coordinator of Disabilities Services was created to bring together under one umbrella the Institute's efforts to provide effective services for students and staff members with disabilities. The Coordinator will integrate Institute policy, programs and training related to disability services, as well as the design and implementation of accommodations for persons with disabilities. Responsibilities will also include liaison activities with outside governmental and professional agencies, updating MIT staff on related regulatory changes and requirements and maintaining the MIT affirmative action plan for individuals with disabilities.

Members of the search committee for this position are: Nancy Collins (Personnel Office), Stephen Immerman (Office of the Senior Vice President), M. Susan Jones ( Computing Support Services/ATIC), Paul Parravano (President's Office), Michael Owu (Planning Office), Bonnie Walters (Undergraduate Education and Student Affairs), and Roy Ward (Physical Plant).
