Community invited to Wiesner memorial

The community is invited to a memorial service for former President Jerome B. Wiesner on Friday, Dec. 2, at 3pm in Kresge Auditorium, followed by an informal reception in McCormick Hall.

Speakers recalling Dr. Wiesner's life will include: MIT Corporation Chairman Paul E. Gray; Frank Press, senior fellow at the Carnegie Institution of Washington and president emeritus of the National Academy of Sciences; Institute Professor Emeritus Walter A. Rosenblith; Adele Simmons, president of the MacArthur Foundation; folklorist Alan Lomax; MIT President Charles M. Vest; Carl Kaysen, David W. Skinner Professor Emeritus of Political Economy, and architect I.M. Pei of I.M. Pei & Partners.

Following a musical interlude, the speakers will be Elma Lewis, founder and artistic director of the Elma Lewis School of Fine Arts; Institute Professor Emeritus Victor F. Weisskopf; Professor Glorianna Davenport of Media Arts and Sciences and Anthony Lewis of the New York Times.

Colleagues of Dr. Wiesner in the Media Laboratory, Cheryl L. Morse and Michael Hawley, as well as Vincent Stringer, music coordinator of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, and John Andrew Ross, music director of the Center for Afro-American Artists, Inc., will perform the musical tributes. The ceremony will conclude with a response by members of the Wiesner family.

Dr. Wiesner, who served as president of MIT from 1971 to 1980, died on October 21 at the age of 79. Except for the time he spent in Washington as science adviser to President Kennedy, he had been continuously associated with MIT since 1942.
