Susan Cohen is New Director of Council for the Arts at MIT

Cambridge, MA -- Susan Cohen has been appointed director of the Council for the Arts at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (CAMIT), a volunteer group of MIT alumni and friends founded in 1972 to support the arts at MIT. Announcement of the appointment was made by Professor Alan R. Brody, associate provost for the arts.

Working with the Council's 10 standing committees, Ms. Cohen will be responsible for administering CAMIT programs including the popular Grants Program, disbursement of the Council's annual awards and prizes, organizing the Max Wasserman Forum on Contemporary Art, managing MIT's membership and programs with Boston's Museum of Fine Arts and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, directing the Performing Arts Excursion Series for students, and producing the Council's new publication, Council Currents.

Ms. Cohen has a degree in art history from Richmond College, London, as well as a background of ongoing study with the Harvard Extension School and the Art Institute of Boston. She has worked in the arts at MIT since 1987, beginning as a gallery attendant at the List Visual Arts Center. She became a senior staff assistant in the Office of the Arts in 1989, working primarily with the executive director of the Council.

The Council for the Arts at MIT is a national volunteer group of alumni and friends founded in 1972 to support the visual, literary and performing arts at the Institute. The Council provides support for many performances, exhibitions, arts facilities and co-curricular programs at MIT through its unique Grants Program and standing committees. Current Council members include New York State Council on the Arts Chairman Kitty Carlisle Hart, architect I.M. Pei '40, art historian Agnes Mongan, and arts patrons Leo Beranek, Vera List, and Raymond Nasher.
