Five win Eloranta Fellowships

Each year the Peter J. Eloranta Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships are awarded to students planning a summer research investigation or creative study in virtually any field: science, engineering, the arts, the humanities or the social sciences. After a review of proposals submitted for this year's awards, the Eloranta Committee has presented $5,000 fellowships to the following projects:

"Computer Educational Development Initiative (CEDI) in Shanghai, China," by Ronald Cao of Kowloon, Hong Kong, and Jacob J. Seid of Mission Viejo, CA. Both are seniors in electrical engineering and computer science.

"Implement Learning in Spreading Activation Networks," by Timothy A. Chklovski, a junior in computer science from Bloomington, MI.

"Mathematics" by Sharon J. Hollander, a senior in mathematics from Cedarhurst, NY.

The Other Side, a play by Ivana Komarcevic, a senior in mathematics from Belgrade, Yugoslavia.

First awarded in 1969, the fellowships are a gift from the late Dr. Edwin H. Land, founder and president of the Polaroid Corp., and were established in memory of Peter J. Eloranta, an employee of Polaroid and member of the MIT Class of 1968.
