United Way drive closes at 80 percent of goal


MIT's United Way campaign officially concluded January 19 although a few donations are still coming in. As of Monday, Jan. 22, $258,084 had been raised in pledges and donations, putting the drive at just over 80 percent of its $322,000 goal. A total of 1,264 members of the MIT community, including 50 Leadership Givers pledging at least $1,000 apiece, participated. Although the campaign is officially over, donations will still be accepted, said Elizabeth Mulcahy, employee campaign manager in the Office of Special Community Services.

Last year's campaign, which had the same goal amount and ran until early February, raised $300,548 (93.3 percent of the goal). Of the 1,515 donors, 64 were Leadership Givers.

A thank-you party for chief solicitors, campaign chairs and others who helped out will be held in mid-February. At that time, there will be a drawing for 10 raffle prizes, including round-trip airline tickets, restaurant gift certificates and accommodations at local hotels. All those who contributed to the United Way during the campaign are automatically entered. Winners will be notified shortly after the drawing.
