45 receive awards in electrical engineering

The Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science presented awards to 45 students, faculty and staff at its annual department party at the Museum of Science on May 18.

In awards conferred on graduate students, the Carlton E. Tucker Teaching Award For Excellence in Teaching went to O. Patrick Kreidl of Fairfax, VA. The Harold L. Hazen Teaching Award For Excellence in Teaching was presented to Lon E. Sunshine of Framingham, MA. James C. Hoe of Cambridge and Sean C. Warnick of Sierra Vista, AZ, won the Frederick C. Hennie III Teaching Award For Excellence in Teaching.

Kathleen E. Wage of Cambridge, Patrick J. LoPresti of Brighton, MA, and Matthew Secor of Oceanside, CA, received promotion to instructor-G.

The George M. Sprowls Award was presented to four recent EECS alumni: Robert D. Blumofe of Austin, TX (SB '95), Jon M. Kleinberg of Wales Center, NY (SB '96), Ignacio S. McQuirk of Mountain View, CA (SB '96), and Carl A. Waldspurger of Atherton, CA (SB '95).

The Northern Telecom/BNR Project Award for the best 6.111 project (spring term 1996) went to William A. Lentz, a senior from Las Cruces, NM. The fall 1996 award was presented to juniors Calvin J. Lin of Coloma, MI, Rex Min of Newport News, VA, and Alvar Saenz-Otero of San Jeronimo, Mexico.

The Morris Joseph Levin Award for Best MasterWorks Oral Thesis Presentation (spring 1997) was given to graduate students Laura Johnson of Reno, NV; Michael E. Leventon of Pittsbugh, PA; Nimisha Mehta of Jackson Heights, NY; Erik G. Miller of Trumbull, CT; David M. Murphy of Winchester, MA; Wendi Beth Rabiner of Berkeley Heights, NJ; Steven R. Shaw of Mansfield, CT, and Mathew Varghese of Hong Kong.

Three students received the George C. Newton Undergraduate Lab Prize: Guang-Ien Cheng, a senior from Potomac, MD; Michael Sung, a graduate student from Woburn, MA, and Allen C. Sun, a senior from Gaithersburg, MD.

Several awards were given for paper or thesis writing. The David A. Chanen Writing Award for the best 6.033 paper went to Lukasz A. Weber, a junior from Indio, CA. The Charles & Jennifer Johnson Thesis Prize was presented to Matthew H. Fredette, a graduate student from Andover, MA, while Steven R. Shaw, a graduate student from Mansfield, CT, won the David Adler Memorial Thesis Prize. Three other graduate students won the Ernst A. Guillemin Thesis Award: Emilija Simic of Belgrade, Yugoslavia; Abram P. Dancy of Merrimack, NH, and Paolo L. Narvaez-Guarnieri of Tangier, Morocco.

Three seniors were presented with the Robert A. Fano UROP Award: M. Josephine Ammer of Apollo, PA; Ekaterina Dolginova of Schenectady, NY, and Damian Megna of North-bridge, MA. The Nylander Award for an Advanced Undergraduate Project went to Grant I. Ho, a graduate student from Don Mills, Ontario.

Ashwin Viswanathan, a junior from Spring, TX, received the Norman R. Carson Outstanding Electrical Engineering Junior Award from Eta Kappa Nu.

Several faculty and staff in EECS also garnered awards. Professor M. Frans Kaashoek received the Ruth and Joel Spira Award for Distinguished Teaching, while Professor Steven B. Leeb won the Junior Bose Award for Excellence in Teaching. Administrator Anne M. Hunter won the Richard J. Caloggero Award.

Department Head Special Recognition Awards went to Professor Tomas Lozano-Perez, Professor Stephen D. Senturia and graduate student Nimisha V. Mehta of Jackson Heights, NY. Professors George C. Verghese and Kenneth N. Stevens were recognized with the Frank E. Perkins Award for Graduate Advising.
