Hong Kong study to be released as book

The MIT study, "Made By Hong Kong," is to be released in the United States as a book in mid-June by the Oxford University Press, following the launch in Hong Kong of the study and book in April.

The study had its American debut in New York in May before the Science Policy Association. Professors Richard Lester and Suzanne Berger discussed the study by an MIT team, which studied the future of industry in Hong Kong and made recommendations for upgrading manufacturing in traditional and new industrial sectors.

The book analyzes the contributions of Hong Kong activities and inputs to production chains in China. It concludes with lessons that US industries considering production in Asia might draw from the Hong Kong experience.

Professors Lester and Berger headed the research in their respective roles as directors of the MIT Industrial Performance Center and the MIT International Science and Technology Initiative. Eight senior faculty and research scientists were involved in heading the research teams, which visited 350 Hong Kong companies and organizations. Sixteen researchers and graduate students also participated in the
project.

The biotechnology/medical team was headed by Institute Professor Daniel I.C. Wang of chemical engineering, who is the director of the Biotechnology Process Engineering Center.

The electronics team was headed by Professor Rafael Reif of electrical engineering and computer science (EECS), director of the Microsystems Technology Laboratory, and by the associate director of the laboratory, Professor Charles Sodini of EECS.

Senior research scientist Dr. Victor Zue, associate director of the Laboratory for Computer Science, headed the information technology team, which also included LCS senior research scientist David Tennenhouse.

The manufacturing team was headed by Professor Alice Amsden, the Ellen Swallow Richards Professor of Political Economy in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning.

The economy and labor markets team was headed by Andrew B. Bernard, assistant professor of economics and a research associate in the Industrial Performance Center.

Professor Berger, the Raphael Dorman and Helen Starbuck Professor in the Department of Political Science, headed the apparel and textiles team, and the education team was headed by Dr. Lester, who is a professor of nuclear engineering.
