United Way campaign at 65%


As of December 7, MIT's United Way campaign total had reached $208,790 in pledges and donations, bringing the effort to 65 percent of its 1998 goal. Among the 891 donors are 56 Leadership Givers pledging at least $1,000 apiece. The campaign is scheduled to end on December 31.

Until Friday, Dec. 18, the campaign is sponsoring a clothing drive with drop-off locations at Lobby 7, the Student Center, the Building E23/E25 atrium, the Building E18-E19 lobby, the Sloan School lobby, Rm NE43-110, Rm NW16-204, Rm NW21-104, Building W91, the Building 34 lobby and Walker Memorial.

MIT community members are urged to donate winter clothing, socks, bed linen, toiletries and nonperishable food. The items will be given to CASPAR, the Salvation Army, and Shelter, Inc. in Cambridge.

Also coming up this Friday, Dec. 11 is the United Way bake sale in Lobby 7 beginning at 10am. Proceeds from the sale of baked goods provided by local vendors and members of the MIT community will go to the United Way of Massachusetts Bay. Anyone interested in helping out with the sale or donating baked goods should contact Liz Mulcahy or Annmarie Cameron at x3-7914.

Everyone who makes a pledge or donation to the campaign is automatically entered into a raffle for prizes donated by local businesses. Prizes donated thus far include a $50 American Express Gift Cheque; overnight stays for two at the Residence Inn in Cambridge, the University Park Hotel at MIT and DoubleTree Guest Suites; admission for two to a jazz show at Scullers Jazz Club; a gift certificate for two to a performance of "Balanchine" at the Boston Ballet in March 1999 and four day passes to Riverside Park. Winners will be announced at the drawing in February.
