45 from MIT attend Richard Guy's funeral

About 45 MIT students accompanied by Lutheran Chaplain Constance Parvey and Professor Jed Z. Buchwald, the East Campus house-master, attended the funeral of Richard A. Guy II in Garden City, NY on September 4.

The students left East Campus by bus at 4am to travel to the 9:30am service at Christ Episcopal Church in Garden City. Mr. Guy, 22, a third-year student from Mission Viejo, CA, was found dead in an East Campus room shortly after midnight on August 31. The Middlesex County medical examiner ruled that his death was due to asphyxiation resulting from nitrous oxide intoxication.

Six MIT students spoke during the service, including Graduate Resident Tutor Howard Yuh, who performed CPR on Mr. Guy before EMTs arrived. The MIT group met with Mr. Guy's father before the service, and attended a luncheon with other mourners after the funeral.

Mr. Guy is survived by his parents, Janet and Richard; a sister, Suzanne; and his grandparents, Lorraine and Christopher Tierney and Irene and Alfred Olszeski. Burial was at Nassau Knolls Cemetery in Port Washington, NY.
