Action urged in letter to Congressional leaders

The Association of American Universities recently sent a letter to the chairmen of the House and Senate budget committees requesting that the final version of the budget resolution allow for ample growth in the fiscal year 2001 budgets for the National Science Foundation (NSF), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Despite bipartisan support, the allocations that have been made available to several appropriations subcommittees will not allow for growth commensurate with the needs and capacity of these three agencies, given the other agencies that also have to be funded out of these bills, the AAU says.

The letter was cosigned by AAU chairman Myles Brand, president of Indiana University, AAU Vice Chairman and MIT President Charles M. Vest, and AAU President Nils Hasselmo. Copies were sent to the chairmen and ranking Democrats of the full appropriations committees and the two subcommittees, as well as to the directors of the Office of Management and Budget and the Office of Science and Technology Policy.
