Kim Beamon, clinical social work supervisor for the Boston Public Schools Comprehensive School-Age Parenting Program since 1998, has been named assistant dean/assistant director of the MIT Office of Minority Education.

In announcing her appointment, Associate Dean Leo Osgood, director of the Office of Minority Education (OME), said," I am confident that Kim Beamon will be an outstanding assistant director and an excellent addition to my leadership team. I look forward to working with her."

"The opportunity to continue my work with students at the collegiate level, is a logical extension of my 20-year career with children, adolescents, families and higher education," said Beamon, who has been an adjunct professor at the Boston College Graduate School for Social Work and the Smith College School for Social Work.

"I hold fast to the view that learning is a reciprocal process," she said. "I expect to learn quite a bit from the MIT community on many levels. I also believe I bring a body of knowledge, ways of knowing, observing and conceptualizing that I can share with this community."

Beamon earned the B.S. in criminal justice from Northeastern University in 1981 and the M.S.W. from Smith College in 1991. She did clinical training at the Hall Mercer Children's Unit at McLean Hospital and received postgraduate certification in Advanced Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy from the Boston University Graduate School of Social Work, Division of Continuing Education. She is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW).

"MIT carries instant name recognition," Beamon said. "Therefore I will no longer have to provide an annotated description of my employer. I can simply say I work at MIT, and people will get it ... That will be different and most welcomed."
