Six seniors honored in biology

The Department of Biology presented awards to six graduating students at the department's annual senior dinner on May 9.

Two students received the John L. Asinari award, established in memory of Asinari (S.B. 1975) to recognize outstanding undergraduate research in the life sciences. The recipients were Elissa M. Schwartzfarb of Boca Raton, Fla., and Tara Mullaney of Harmony, R.I.

The Whitehead Prize, given to a student who has shown outstanding promise for a career in biological research as demonstrated by academic scholarship and research, was presented to Tetsuya Matsuguchi of Saitama-ken, Japan. The Ned Holt Prize honors a biology major who has demonstrated excellence in scholarship as well as service to the department and the MIT community. It was presented to Cindy M. Ku of Cedar Knolls, N.J. The Salvador E. Luria Prize for outstanding scholarship and research of publication quality went to Dobrin Draganov of Bulgaria.

The new Gene M. Brown Award is presented to a graduating senior who has both an outstanding academic record and has made important contributions to the biology teaching program. The first awardee was Stacy Chen of Talmage, Calif.
