Alan Siegel, director of the Division of Psychology at the Cambridge Health Alliance, has been named chief of the MIT Medical Department 's mental health service, effective Sept. 1.

Maryanne Kirkbride, director of public health at the Codman Square Health Center since 1994, has been named clinical director for campus life, a new position. She joined MIT Medical on Aug. 26.

MIT Medical Director Dr. William Kettyle and Executive Director Annette Jacobs announced the appointments in a joint statement.

"Both of these individuals will add great strengths to our staff. We're looking forward to working with Alan and Maryanne on more effective ways for MIT Medical to reach out to and serve the MIT community. We want to make it easier for students and staff to get the medical and mental health services they need. Outreach is a key element of our strategy," Kettyle and Jacobs said.

Siegel, a psychologist, received the A.B., Ed.M., and Ed.D. degrees from Boston University and trained as a psychoanalyst at the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute, where he serves on the Executive Council and the Ethics and Professional Practices Committee. His doctoral dissertation investigated depression and alienation among college freshmen and the effect of these emotional states on suicidal tendencies, academic achievement, drug use, patterns of friendship, sexual behaviors and family relationships.

"I'm especially interested in community mental health, in ways to bring services to people in the community, and to people who are not traditional users of mental health services," said Siegel, who is also co-director of education and director of clinical consultation for the Department of Psychiatry at the Cambridge Health Alliance. He is an assistant professor of psychology at Harvard Medical School and a lecturer in psychology at Boston University School of Medicine.

Kirkbride will act as a liaison between MIT Medical and the MIT community. She will work closely with students, faculty, staff and administrators from departments throughout the Institute. She also will manage MIT Medical's Health Education Service.

"I've made a career out of being 'glue' -- helping people work together across departments and programs to reach a common goal," she said. "In this role, I hope to help develop a collective vision for improving health at MIT and supporting the work of MIT Medical in meeting the needs of the community."

A registered nurse, she holds two bachelor's degrees from Boston University, one in mechanical engineering and one in nursing, as well as a combined master's in nursing and business administration from Northeastern University.

Before joining the Codman Square Health Center, Kirkbride was coordinator of health services for a medical day care and residential respite program for children living with HIV infection.
