Underpinnings of emotion to be discussed

The molecular underpinnings of emotion and perception are among the topics that will be explored by neuroscientists from around the world at the McGovern Institute symposium, "Mechanisms Underlying Perception, Action and Mind," Oct. 20-21 in Wong Auditorium.

The McGovern Institute for Brain Research sponsors events and programs to encourage the communication of progress in interdisciplinary brain research. The events are designed to promote synergy in the international research community and to enrich the learning environment on the MIT campus.

On the morning of Oct. 20, Ann Graybiel, the Walter A. Rosenblith Professor of Neuroscience, will chair a series of talks on emotions/fear; in the afternoon session, Institute Professor Emilio Bizzi will chair talks on motor cortical systems. On Oct. 21, the morning session chaired by James DiCarlo and Christopher Moore, assistant professors of brain and cognitive sciences, is on perception in the cortex. The afternoon session on "Understanding Other Minds" is chaired by Nancy Kanwisher, professor of brain and cognitive sciences. All MIT faculty chairs for the event are principal investigators at the McGovern Institute.

Speakers include researchers from Emory University, Dartmouth, Harvard, Brandeis, Rockefeller University, Tokyo Medical and Dental University and the University of Parma, Italy.

Registration is not required. For more information, e-mail mcgovern@mit.edu or visit http://web.mit.edu/mcgovern.
