Hockfield responds to State of the Union Address

Susan Hockfield, president of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has issued the following statement:

Our nation's strength in the global marketplace depends on the innovations that spring from research and education. In his State of the Union Address, the president clearly recognized the competitive challenges facing our economy, and his promises of increased funding for basic research, education and energy R&D directly address these challenges. The president is right: "We must continue to lead the world in human talent and creativity."

The American Competitiveness Initiative and the two complementary, bipartisan legislative proposals now before Congress form a strong foundation on which to build. We at MIT look forward to working with the administration and Congress on the follow-on legislation and funding efforts that will start when the budget is released next week.
