Andrew Bacevich on Washington Rules: America's Path to Permanent War

Presented by the Center for International Studies Starr Forum

In a talk that leads to a candid and sometimes impassioned give and take with his audience, Andrew Bacevich describes a national security consensus that has over time “thrust us into a situation which is really akin to permanent war.”

“If we want to bring moral considerations into the argument (for perpetuating the war in Afghanistan), and I’d argue we ought to, then please let’s do it in a serious way. It has to be about something more than we want to be able to sleep well tonight, so let me send some American soldiers somewhere so I can sleep well. That’s not moral. That’s not even serious.” — Andrew J. Bacevich
