Yesterday, MIT president Susan Hockfield joined Harvard president Drew Faust on the Charlie Rose Show for a 30-minute discussion about the state of higher education in the United States.

The two presidents touched on a range of subjects — the collaborative nature of universities, the call to service answered by today’s students, the critical role research universities must play in revitalizing America’s economy, and the benefit of new centers of educational excellence existing outside the United States — but a common theme emerged: that universities can be as transformational for civilizations as they are for individuals.
