IS&T now offers limited support for Android mobile devices

Innovation in the mobile market and a surge of available Android devices have created strong interest in this platform.


MIT Information Services and Technology now offers limited support for devices running Google's Android 2.2 mobile operating system (code name: Froyo). This includes support for

  • MIT IMAP email (e-mail only)
  • MIT Exchange service (e-mail, calendar and contacts)
  • Connectivity to MIT and MIT Secure Wi-Fi networks

Due to the lack of standardization of the Android platform, IS&T's support documentation covers as many Android 2.2 devices as possible, regardless of the carrier. This documentation includes required settings for all Android models available today. It will evolve as the Android operating system matures and new updates are released.

Android's appeal

Innovation in the mobile market and a surge of available Android devices have created strong interest in this platform. An Android device may be an option for those who want to:

  • Upgrade from their older devices (e.g., Palm OS, Windows Mobile 5 and 6)
  • Use an iPhone-like alternative with comparable capabilities

The Android platform is a strong iPhone competitor with many iPhone-like features. For example, Android has an application delivery system called Android Market and a rich WebKit browser capable of displaying webpages in both full format and mobile-optimized versions. Some of the latest Android devices, like Sprint's EVO 4G and Verizon's Droid X, can create a mobile hotspot, thus eliminating the need to physically tether to your laptop (feature charges do apply). All of the major carriers offer Android devices.

Although many of the latest devices — like Verizon's Droid X, Sprint's Epic 4G, and AT&T's Captivate — are being shipped with Android 2.1 software, IS&T expects these devices to be updated to Android 2.2 and can therefore recommend them.
