MIT has been ranked third in the recently published QS World University Rankings for 2011-12, up two spots from the Institute’s fifth-place ranking last year.

In the rankings by faculty area, MIT continued to be ranked No. 1 in engineering and improved its ranking in other categories this year:
- Natural sciences: 3rd (4th in 2010)
- Life sciences and medicine: 7th (8th in 2010)
- Social sciences and management: 9th (12th in 2010)
- Arts and humanities: 26th (27th in 2010)
