Inaugural MIT golf outing a success

Event helped to raise funds in support of DAPER’s broad-based programs.
MIT’s Department of Athletics, Recreation and Physical Education (DAPER) held an inaugural golf outing on Monday and after a cloudy morning, warm temperatures and sunny skies prevailed to help make the event a resounding success. A total of 40 golfers teed off on the Pete Dye-designed Pound Ridge Golf Club in Pound Ridge, N.Y., helping to raise funds in support of DAPER’s broad-based programs.

“I want to thank everyone who was involved in helping to make our inaugural golf outing successful,” said Julie Soriero, MIT director of athletics and department head of DAPER. “The Pound Ridge Golf Club was a truly outstanding venue and, in particular, I would like to thank Ken Wang ‘71 for his generosity in donating the course. We are already planning for another outing next year and are looking forward to another successful event.”

Taking home bragging rights from the tournament was the foursome of David Tohir ’79, Brian Tohir, Frank Granito and Sasha Mrdelja. The group put together an impressive score of 10-under, 62 in the scramble format event. Just two shots behind in second with a 64 was the foursome of Greg Turner ’74, John Wang ’14, Paulina Mustafa ’13 and Soriero. Another highlight of the outing was MIT head football coach, Chad Martinovich, who sank a hole-in-one on his final shot of the day to win the closest-to-the-pin award.

The event was held at the Pound Ridge Golf Club, ranked as one of the top public courses in the country by several golf publications. Owned and developed by Wang, it was recently featured in Golf Magazine as a course that is every bit as challenging as Winged Foot or Quaker Ridge.

In addition to the individual players, several individuals and companies added support to the event through sponsorships. Paul Rudovsky ’66, Phillip Kim ‘89, ABM Janitorial Services, Cape Island Tennis and Track and Health Fitness Corporation all provided hole sponsorships with Athletic Surfaces adding a patron level sponsorship.
