Joseph Minervini, division head and senior research engineer at the Plasma Science and Fusion Center, has received the 2013 IEEE Council on Superconductivity Award for Continuing and Sustained Contributions in the Field of Applied Superconductivity.

Minervini, who is also a senior research engineer in MIT's Department of Nuclear Science and Engineering, was honored for his impact on the field of large-scale applications of superconductivity, specifically for his work on numerous magnet systems for fusion energy, magnetic levitation, energy storage, power generation, magnetic separation, high-energy physics and medical applications. When he was the MIT principal investigator for the U.S. magnet systems R&D program for the international collaborative fusion project known as ITER, Minervini contributed to the design, fabrication and testing of the Central Solenoid Model Coil, then the world's largest and most powerful pulsed superconducting magnet.

The award was presented at the opening plenary session of The 23rd Magnet Technology Conference on July 15 at the Westin Copley Place, Boston.
