Six MIT researchers win Sloan Research Fellowships

MIT researchers specializing in economics, mathematics, chemistry and physics are among 126 selected.
Two mathematicians, two economists, a physicist and chemist from MIT are among the 126 American and Canadian researchers awarded 2013 Sloan Research Fellowships, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation announced this week.

MIT’s new Sloan Research Fellows are: David Donaldson, an assistant professor of economics; Jacob Fox, an assistant professor of mathematics; Anna Mikusheva, the Castle Krob Career Development Assistant Professor of Economics; Elizabeth Nolan, the Pfizer-Laubach Career Development Assistant Professor of Chemistry; Sug Woo Shin, an assistant professor of mathematics; and Jesse Thaler, the Class of 1943 Career Development Assistant Professor of Physics.

Awarded annually since 1955, Sloan Research Fellowships are given to early-career scientists and scholars whose achievements and potential identify them as rising stars among the next generation of scientific leaders. This year’s recipients are drawn from 61 colleges and universities across the United States and Canada.

“The Sloan Research Fellows are the best of the best among young scientists,” Paul L. Joskow, president of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, said in a statement. “If you want to know where the next big scientific breakthrough will come from look to these extraordinary men and women. The Foundation is proud to support them during this pivotal stage of their careers.”

Administered and funded by the foundation, the fellowships are awarded in eight scientific fields: chemistry, computer science, economics, mathematics, evolutionary and computational molecular biology, neuroscience, ocean sciences and physics. To qualify, candidates must first be nominated by fellow scientists and subsequently selected by an independent panel of senior scholars. Fellows receive $50,000 to be used to further their research.
