MIT’s Director of Sports Medicine Tom Cronan was named the 2013 Athletic Trainer of the Year by the Athletic Trainers of Massachusetts (ATOM), the organization has announced. The distinguished award is given to an athletic trainer in recognition of their outstanding contributions and achievements in the profession.

"Tom Cronan is among the most well-respected athletic trainers in the region,” said Thomas M. Dodge, ATOM President. “He is a consummate professional and we are very proud to present him with our annual Athletic Trainer of the Year Award."

Cronan is in his 12th year as director of sports medicine, and his 22nd year as a practicing athletic trainer Massachusetts. He coordinates care for MIT’s 33 intercollegiate varsity sports programs, which amount to the most intercollegiate programs among NCAA Division III institutions in the country. In his time as athletic trainer, he has been a clinician, professor and clinical preceptor; all of which have allowed him to positively influence patients and students alike.

Cronan consistently demonstrates his pride in the profession of athletic training, as well as his enthusiasm for the MIT community. In addition to his athletic training duties, Cronan is an active member of the MIT community, providing thoughtful insight and direction for various entities, such as the MIT Department of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation Senior Staff; Division of Student Life Strategic Planning Theme Team; Student Health Clinical Advisory Committee; and the Recreation Health and Safety Committee.

He also meshes his passion of healthcare with his love of MIT by organizing and managing the Monday Morning Clinic, which is designed to provide MIT’s non-intercollegiate active population with an avenue for sports medicine. Cronan has overseen this operation for 11 years and does so entirely on a volunteer basis.
