It was once said that “All roads lead to Rome,” but today, with the ubiquity of the Internet, “eduroam” may be where the roads are leading — at least for the education and research communities. Eduroam is a secure, worldwide WiFi service that provides members with access to networks at thousands of educational and research institutions in the United States and more than 50 countries.

MIT community members can now use their existing credentials to connect to eduroam. In addition, on August 19, Information Systems and Technology (IS&T) launched the on-campus eduroam WiFi network. Available everywhere that the MIT and MIT SECURE WiFi networks are available, it offers the same level of security as MIT SECURE. Visitors from participating institutions can connect to the on-campus eduroam network using their home institution credentials.

How It Works

For the traveler: Eduroam provides per-user, per-session encrypted network access for visitors from participating institutions, without the need to gain guest credentials on arrival at an eduroam-enabled location. The connectivity is instantaneous. Study-abroad students can join thousands of eduroam hotspots without any hassle or data-roaming charges.

For the Institution: Eduroam removes the administrative steps required to provision visitors from other educational institutions. Access between networks from research and education institutions is negotiated once during the federation process and for all members of participating institutions.

Making the Connection

Instructions on joining the eduroam WiFi network are provided in the Knowledge Base article, "How do I connect to eduroam on MIT wireless?"
