The following email was sent today to the MIT community by President L. Rafael Reif.

To the members of the MIT community:

I share the sad news that Kaitlin R. Goldstein, a graduate student in the Department of Architecture and the Building Technology Program, has died. Known to her friends as Kate, she was passionately interested in energy solutions for the developing world, a subject she was exploring in a remote region of northern India at the time of her death.

As Kate's family and friends bear this sorrow, we offer them the sympathy and support of the MIT community. The death of someone so young and promising is a terrible loss; we should all take time to reach out to those around us.

The Institute's student support and mental health services are available to all members of the MIT community and can be accessed via MIT Together. The Office of the Dean for Graduate Education -- 617-253-4860 -- can offer particular support and advice for graduate students.

As plans emerge to commemorate Kate, we will share them through the MIT News site.

In sympathy,

L. Rafael Reif
