EAPS to host Theodore Madden Symposium and Memorial Service

Daylong event to celebrate the life and work of EAPS professor emeritus Theodore “Ted” Madden

A symposium to honor the life and work of Professor Theodore "Ted" Madden will be held Friday, March 14, in Room 54-915 of the Green Building (Building 54). Madden died on Nov. 11, 2013, at the age of 88.

The daylong symposium will draw together current Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences (EAPS) faculty; former colleagues; and former students to celebrate Madden’s life and legacy. Sessions entitled "From the Earth's Core to the Crust" and "From the Earth's Crust to Outer Space" will reflect the broad scope of Madden’s research, which extended from Earth’s core to the outer magnetosphere and included topics as diverse as electromagnetics, seismology, gravity waves, plasma physics, and random networks.

The talks will be followed at 4 p.m. by a memorial service in the MIT Chapel (Building W15), with a reception immediately afterward in Room 54-923 of the Green Building.

Individuals who would like to make a donation in Madden's memory are encouraged to give to MIT's Theodore Madden Fellowship Fund, which supports graduate fellowships, primarily for students in geology and geophysics.

Topics: Memorial services, Earth and atmospheric sciences, Faculty, Special events and guest speakers
