MIT Strong marathon team seeking volunteers

Help support the team on its 20-mile training run and during Marathon Weekend.

The MIT Strong marathon team is in the final countdown to the Boston Marathon on April 21, and the runners are seeking volunteers to help with their final 20-mile run and during marathon weekend.

For a 20-mile run on Saturday, April 5, the team needs assistance setting up and staffing water stops along a route from Framingham to the Zesiger Center. In addition, several “course monitors” are needed to drive the course and keep track of runners, check on them at water stops, and drive anyone who needs help. The run will start at 8 a.m., and most runners will finish by noon.

During Marathon Weekend, there are several events at which volunteers would be helpful, including a team event on Saturday evening, April 19, and on race day, Monday, April 21. On Marathon Monday, volunteers can help coordinate MIT cheering stations on the route, as well as help with logistics such as transporting runners to the Zesiger Center after they cross the finish line between noon and 5 p.m.

MIT Strong consists of 38 runners from all parts of the MIT community: students, faculty, staff, and alumni. The team will represent MIT at at the Boston Marathon and is raising money for the Sean A. Collier Memorial Fund. Visit mitstrong.mit.edu to learn more and to sponsor the team.

“Marathon running is not usually described as a team sport, but we could not succeed without the help we’ve been receiving from the community,” says Chad Galts, director of communications in the School of Engineering and one of the team’s organizers. “We could not be more grateful for everyone’s generosity and support.”
